thefrogman.me: Don't hate the police. →

thefrogman:

Bad cops exist. There is no doubt. Any organization that gets large enough will suffer from corruption. If you get together a thousand math teachers, a few of them are bound to be evil math teachers. Dividing by zero when no one is looking, trying to collapse the universe.

The police have been…

My father was a Sargent for one of the cities in our state with the highest crime rate.  He is a rough, hardened man, and rarely talks about his time spent on that job, but the things he did that I sparingly hear about astound me.  Like the time he sat with a teenage boy and literally held his brain inside his head, and comforted him as he died on the side of the road.  His twin brother had been driving, and crashed the car.  This was a common sight for him, and a common things to deal with.

My father addressed hostage situations and at one point entered a home where he had no idea if he’d make it out alive or not.  A gunman in the basement had his rifle aimed to the ceiling, listening for footsteps and firing, trying to shoot my father from below.  My dad booked it out of there with bullets shooting up the floorboards behind him.  Again, this was a common situation he found himself in.

My father had an Alvin and the Chipmunks cassette in his squad car that he kept around for the children he dealt with.  He once had a very distraught drunk man in the back of his car, and turned it on and sang along with that man all the way to the station.  That man remembered his kindness and addressed it in his court hearing for some reason.

There are bad cops.  There are cops that take advantage of their power.  Then there are cops like my father, who, even as rough as they are, have their best intentions for you.  My dad was nominated for awards, had local TV specials done about him (He had arrested the most DUIs in the state in the 90s), and even had the simple kindness to keep a children’s music cassette in his car for his younger charges, and intoxicated ones.

Diss them all you want, but I’ll always have proof that there is at least one good cop in the world.
